Hey Everyone,

A bit panicked here as I accidentally shifted my new tundra into reverse while cruising down the highway. Still can't figure out how i managed to do it but I did. Other than the back up camera popping on for a few seconds I did not notice/here anything unusual. Should I be concerned? ECU smart enough to not let reverse engage?

Appreciate any input.

Ben

I want to say you are all good but I am not 100% sure. If there was no kerning or strange noises I think the computer stopped it from sh I fting.

The trans is electronic.
It has safeties in place for when idiotic shit happens.

There are a few videos of people shifting just to prove that the backup cam will activate.

No problems...

Yet...

I really doubt that the engineers thought "Hey Bob, what if I want to look at my trailer???"

It was more like "Hey Bob, what if some idiot accidentally puts his truck in reverse while going down the road?"

If the trans shifted into reverse at highways speed it could/would result in a blown trans, a blown rear end, and an accident/loss of control at the very least.

In general mirrors are there to check what you are towing.

ahh.. i think i agree with you more lol.

The camera is just a side effect of the truck seeing the electronic shifter in R... Lol.

Likely one could put it in park and nothing bad would happen.

I know I have shifted rental cars to 1 at 65, and it just says shift denied hahaha.

My ex-girlfriend accidentally threw my truck into reverse while doing about 55mph on the highway once.

The rear tires chirped for a split second and the engine stalled. I put the tranny into neutral and safely pulled to the side of the road. After coming to a stop, it took a few tries to get the engine to turn over. Once it did, it was fine.

About 5,000 miles later (40,000 on the odometer), I had to have the tranny rebuilt. The sunshield had cracked and I lost 2nd, 4th, and reverse.

This was on a 2003 Silverado. I'm sure the newer Tundras use newer technology to prevent ex-girlfriends from ruining our trucks.

I did that once a long time ago with a '72 Chevelle. I heard a spindle grind for a second before I realized what I did and pulled it out of reverse.

I got lucky and the car drove fine. I was only going about 20 MPH.

So, being as a tranny is a rebuilt dude with tits, or a chick with a dick, what happens when you have a tranny rebuilt?

Is it then a chick with a dick and a dick or a dude with tits plus? :lol5:

Yea, older gm's were electronically controlled but still had just electronic linkage, not sure what year they switched to fully electronic. That was over 10 years ago, might have had actual linkage still back then.

I feel old.

And oddly perverted because you said tranny. >:D

the truck would not move anymore. everything would basically move the opposite way and blow up so you are fine

She put your column shift truck in R while you were driving??? What was she doing way over there???? >:D

Years ago when I was in High School I had a '57 Cadillac Convertible , the shift pattern was
P N D-D L R . Well one day I was down shifting coming to a stop light and managed to pull it into reverse momentarily and the rear tires let me know with a screech .

The other day I was getting off the freeway in my '14 Tundra and using the S mode I down shifted to 1 a little too early i.e. at too high a speed. All that happened was 2 beeps from the computer and stayed in 2 until the speed dropped to an acceptable speed then it downshifted to 1.

Yep, the computer can be your friend :)

You will be fine, truck is smarter than that going forward. I did just the opposite a while back. I was backing quickly and threw it into drive before I was at a safe speed to do so, truck shut off
